🧑💻 How to job hunt in Web3 effectively? Community insights on red & green flags to watch out for when applying for a job.
The Web3 space is the next big career path on which to land an ideal job with companies like OpenSea, Polygon, Meta, and many others. Still, this industry’s full of scammers and if you want to avoid them, you need to be aware of some red flags.
We asked Lacey (also known online as LaceyK), founder of Metaintro, to share tips on how to build a career in Web3 successfully. Let’s dig in!
— Who are you?
Lacey has spent her entire career in HR and HR tech. Previously she built Casting Depot, a labor marketplace in the media and entertainment space, and now her most recent venture has been building out Metaintro — a professional resume wallet for Web3. Lacey spends most of her day speaking to Web3 job seekers, employers, and looking at job descriptions in the space.
Adjacent to the product, she also runs the largest Discord community (with over 7,000 members) dedicated to career opportunities in Web3. There are about 4,000 jobs posted in the community each month – ranging from technical to non-technical roles. According to Lacey, depending on the type of role posted, there’s as high as a 90% CTR and placement.
— How do people discover Metaintro?
The popularity of the server has grown exponentially over the past few months. Having spent zero ETH on building out the community, new members generally discover Metaintro either through word of mouth or Crypto Twitter. Additionally, the steady growth in the Metaintro community has also allowed Lacey, as both a founder and moderator, to get to know every single person that comes into the server. Every new member is equally as important, and she says:
“I always go out of my way to make them feel as such. Maybe this is what makes our community so special.”
— What kinds of jobs are available in Web3?
As Lacey claims, as projects have begun to scale, the need to hire different types of roles has obviously expanded. Here’s a quick list of roles she sees posted often:
Developer roles (Solidity, Rust, Frontend, Backend, Golang, Unity, etc.)
Developer Relations
Design (UI, UX, NFT, etc.)
Content Writer / Technical Content Writer
Product and Project Management
Marketing
Legal, Security, and Compliance
Finance and Accounting
Business Development and Sales
Memer
Event Planner
Technical and Non-Technical Recruiter
Executive Assistant
NFT Analyst
Social Media Manager
Community Moderating and Management
New roles are popping up every day in the Metaintro Discord so it’s tough to make a comprehensive list of all the types of opportunities. However, if you’re eager to know which roles are MOST in demand and the hardest to fill, here are the top four Lacey sees:
Developer (Golang, smart-contract, Rust, Solidity, game dev)
Recruiter / technical recruiter
Legal counsel
Product Manager
— What are the most in-demand soft & hard skills for Web3 job roles?
In short, it depends on many factors — the role, company, and people themselves. Having a basic understanding of what Web3 is, how it works, and the potential of it is very important to know before interviewing. Lacey wouldn’t recommend going on any interviews without having the fundamentals down pat. If you’re just making the career transition into Web3, here are some resources to start learning about the space and building your skills:
Non-technical
Technical
— Where to find job opportunities?
Similar to Web2, there are a ton of unique ways to find jobs in the Web3 industry. Here are a few ways:
Crypto Twitter is the first way Lacey would recommend finding job vacancies. Just try searching “hiring Web3” — and there you are.
Web3 conferences and hackathons are an incredible way to network with top industry companies or those of your interest.
Look at the portfolio companies under larger venture funds like a16z or Sequoia. Chances are that they have a job board with a handful of vacancies.
The Metaintro Discord. If you search under the Web3 Jobs category, you’ll see 21+ channels with jobs posted every hour.
— How to identify a good or bad employer in Web3?
— What does compensation and benefits look like in Web3?
The honest answer to this question is “it depends”. With rates all over the map depending on a few factors such as company size, funding amount, and area within Web3 – the payscale truly ranges. If you’re interested in reading more about rates within the industry, check out the Airtable list here.
Benefits, however, do look a bit different in the Web3 space. As you begin to get job offers while on your job hunt journey, you’ll see that there are quite a few unique ways to look at compensation and benefits in the space. “For instance, receiving a share of tokens, access to whitelist opportunities, and even the ability to work anonymously are all various proposals you’ll come across given by employers,” Lacey says.
P.S. Check out a thread with 18 common benefits in Web3.
At the Web3 Growth Summit we’ll also talk about how to build HR-tech startup in Web3 when everyone is firing. So stay tuned & happy job hunting!
Web3 is a fast-changing industry, that’s why we can’t leave you without up-to-date news. Here are the hottest bite-sized ones to share this week:
1/ South African H20 Water Securities firm receives $150M from GEM Digital to launch the first-ever crypto water token. They’ll allocate the water delivery infrastructure to areas that lack access to fresh water.
2/ Web3 gaming firm Planetarium Labs raises $32M in Series A funding. Instead of just adding elements of P2E or NFTs into games, they’ll reimagine community-driven content and provide powerful tools for studios to deeply engage with their players and investors.
3/ Another crypto gaming firm Cauldron closes a $6.6M seed round and aims to launch its first Web3 gaming world. They’re planning to become the “Pixar of Web3” through a key element: storytelling.
4/ Axie Infinity lost about $600M due to a recent hack via… a job offer. It all started with a developer receiving & downloading a fake job offer on LinkedIn. But there wasn’t any company — only hackers who drained huge sums from Axie Infinity. From PDF --> $600M hack.
P.S. We’re having a speaker from Axie Infinity at the Web3 Growth Summit. It’s got to be super exciting to know how they’re dealing with everything right now 👀
