Gm and happy Monday frens🖖
Web3 has a problem with onboarding non-crypto users. We all know that. Hundreds of layer 2s, while offering some diversity, didn't help because they are mostly made for people who already use crypto and understand something about it.
One of the blockchains that is positioning itself as "consumer-first" is Morph. They want to bring web3 consumer experiences to the chain.
How do they plan to do that and what is their strategy?

🤿 Deep-dive: Blockchain for consumers
Morph is the first Ethereum Layer 2 that combines Optimistic Rollups (OP) and Zero-Knowledge Rollups (ZK) technologies, offering a hybrid rollup solution. It is designed specifically to bring familiar consumer experiences on-chain, targeting mass adoption beyond the typical Web3 audience, which often consists of a smaller, more technical user base.
Cecilia Hsueh, Co-Founder & CEO @ Morph, has shared Morph's plans to boost consumer adoption. Watch full presentation here.
Problems with modern Layer 2s
Earlier Layer 2 solutions heavily focused on technological aspects without building genuine ecosystems or sustainable user bases. Initially, Layer 2 projects were purely centered around technology, debating which scaling solution was better and how to optimize them. This led many Layer 2 projects to become "ghost chains," with little to no user engagement or ecosystem development.
As a second wave, some projects tried to attract users through airdrops and staking campaigns, leading to short-term spikes in TVL.
However, many of these TVLs were not genuine; they were driven by institutional or custodial funds that left after the staking period ended, resulting in no lasting ecosystem or user engagement.
Morph's focus on builders and users
Morph’s strategy focuses on supporting builders and users rather than getting caught up in the technology or TVL metrics.
According to Cecilia, building a sustainable Layer 2 infrastructure requires focusing on the needs of developers and end-users. Developers often face significant challenges, such as finding the right team, raising funds, and acquiring users.
To address these pain points, Morph offers a comprehensive support system, helping builders grow from scratch to becoming established projects, including support for exchange listings, marketing, and community building. Morph's aim is to foster a balanced, long-term ecosystem where developers and users thrive together.
Technical features of the chain
There are three main tech features that are important in Morph.
Decentralized Sequencer: Morph is the first Layer 2 to have a decentralized sequencer live on its testnet.
Hybrid Rollup Technology: By combining OP and ZK rollups, Morph finds a middle ground that offers both security and cost-efficiency. ZK rollups are known for their security but are expensive, whereas OP rollups are cheaper but less secure. The hybrid solution requires only trial proofs with ZK proof as a backup when challenged, providing a safer and more cost-effective model.
Modular Design: The modular design allows developers greater flexibility and safety when coding, helping them to build more robust applications on the Morph network.
Plan to target new markets and users
Morph is focused on bringing familiar consumer applications on-chain to drive mass adoption.
Existing Web3 applications often have high entry barriers due to complicated UI/UX and an overemphasis on technical knowledge. Morph aims to simplify this experience, making it as easy as using Web2 applications, so users don’t need to understand the underlying blockchain technology.
Moreover, Morph targets markets in the Asia Pacific, Europe, and the Global South, where there are more active crypto users compared to the US. By focusing on these regions, Morph plans to leverage the existing high-quality, talented developers and user bases who are eagerly looking for applications that add real value to their lives.
